Using D&D and Pokémon in Homeschooling
When most people see Pokémon or Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), they probably just think of fun games. But as a homeschooler, I see so much more — amazing learning opportunities wrapped up in the excitement my kids have while playing. There are many games out there, but these two are our absolute favorites. Join me as I share how our “nerdom” is actually an educational powerhouse!
✨ Update: Since writing this post, I created a D&D-inspired creative writing curriculum that we now use in our homeschool to turn storytelling and adventures into writing practice. If you’d like to try it with your kids, you can download it in the D&D section below!
Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)
- Problem Solving & Strategy: There’s always a challenge to overcome — a monster to defeat or a puzzle to solve. But in D&D, players need to come up with creative solutions, thinking critically to succeed.
- Teamwork: This isn’t a solo adventure. You’re part of a group — called the “party” — working together to reach your goal. Learning to cooperate with friends or even strangers is essential. And remember: don’t split the party!
- Math Skills: Dice rolls happen constantly, requiring quick mental math to add bonuses, subtract damage, and calculate probabilities.
- Listening Skills: The Dungeon Master (DM) tells the story and guides the adventure. Paying close attention is essential—you don’t want to miss important clues! This is especially helpful for my child with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), who practices comprehension and focus through gameplay.
- Comprehension: Players must understand and interpret the DM’s narrative, piecing together what’s happening in the adventure.
- Socialization: D&D introduces you to tons of people. You can stick with one group or meet new ones — the possibilities for connection are endless.
- Friendship Building: Joining a party often leads to lifelong friendships formed through shared quests and teamwork.
- Creative Thinking: Sometimes the obvious solution isn’t the best one. Players learn to think outside the box to overcome tricky obstacles.
- Empathy: By stepping into their character’s shoes and role-playing their emotions and decisions, players develop a deeper understanding of different perspectives — a skill that translates well into real life.
One of the ways we’ve expanded on D&D in our homeschool is by turning our adventures into creative writing exercises.
I created a simple D&D-inspired creative writing curriculum that helps kids:
• Create their own characters
• Build worlds and story settings
• Write adventure scenes
• Turn gameplay into storytelling practice
It’s not perfect, but it’s been a really fun way to encourage writing in our homeschool.

Pokémon
- Math: Yes, Pokémon involves math too! Players must calculate damage, keep track of hit points, and manage resources quickly during battles.
- Reading Comprehension: Understanding each Pokémon’s attacks and abilities means reading and memorizing details to anticipate their impact.
- Problem Solving & Strategy: Success depends on staying one step ahead. Knowing your opponent’s deck helps you plan counters and tactics to win the match.
- Sportsmanship: Whether winning or losing, respect and fairness are key parts of the game.
- Socializing: Local card shops often host Pokémon games, and you can even play online against opponents worldwide. Competitions and regionals offer chances to meet other players from all over.
- Friendship Building: Meeting people who share your passion is a great way to build friendships — sometimes with folks across the country or even around the globe!
At first glance, it might just look like we’re playing games. But through these adventures and battles, we’re learning — all while having a blast. And that’s the best kind of education.
